Fashionista or not, every girl should have a great fitting blazer, to turn the simplest of outfits around. These days, I’ve been particularly focused on adding staple pieces to my wardrobe. While double-breasted blazers aren’t strangers to my clothing line-up, I simply had to add it in another staple colour which will transition beautifully into spring, and then later on into fall . Take note that blazers typically never go out of style. The versatility, structure and fit of a double-breasted blazer are just a few attributes that make it an excellent staple piece for your wardrobe. Fast forward, and years later, I still get questions about my black double-breasted blazer which you can be viewed
here, from a previous post. Looking to add a new blazer to your spring wardrobe; I’ll be sharing three things to consider when determining the fit of a blazer – so let’s delve into it.
How to Determine if a Blazer Fits Well
The overall structure and fit of a double-breasted blazer or any blazer for that matter, is undoubtedly one of the reasons why many have been drawn to it. While a great fitting blazer is not always readily and easily accessible, you may also want to consider alterations for the perfect fit. In the meanwhile, here are three things to consider when determining if a blazer fits well before you throw in the towel and head to the seamstress.
- The Shoulder – The seam of the shoulder should align perfectly with the point at which your arm meets your torso or where your shoulder ends. Give yourself a little hug in the fitting room to test the fit. If pulling is minimal, you have yourself a winner. Excessive pulling is however an indication that the blazer is not the best fit.
- The Sleeves – When considering a full-length blazer, the sleeves should fit a little above your thumb when standing with your arms at your side. If the sleeves are almost in sync with the joint of your thumb, I reckon you’ll have one less thing to worry about in your quest to find the best fitting blazer.
- The Bust – A blazer that properly fits the bust area, will cover about a half of each breast. When buttoned, there should be no wrinkles or bunching in the chest area. I’ll add that, should a blazer fit the body perfectly in all areas, with just a little pulling in the chest area, its worth considering as a blazer can be stylishly worn open as well.
The blazer in this post is from Zara, my go to store for chic and trendy finds. While purchased in Fall 19’, you’d be elated to know that they’ve restocked it for their newest season. You can shop this blazer in the camel pictured
here . I’m currently eyeing this pastel blazer from Nordstrom , as well as this chartreuse blazer which is a combination of both yellow and green, a colour so beautiful my description does it no justice. Both of these blazers are by Topshop and can be found at the Bay in Canada, Nordstrom in the USA and directly from Topshop if in the UK or Europe. The colours are right on trend for spring and will be great additions to your wardrobe in preparation for the upcoming season.
The Versatility of a Blazer
The versatility of a blazer is endless, and is notably one its strongest selling points. It can be worn on multiple occasions and can take you from day to night. The length of this particular blazer allows it to not only function as a blazer but a dress as well. A few years ago I wore a very similar double-breasted blazer as a dress – pictured below. In a previous post, I also shared how I
styled this black blazer for the fall , so be sure to check it out for other styling alternatives.
A blazer is a great way to enhance your work wardrobe and isn’t only limited to the corporate environment. The ability to incorporate a blazer into almost any look for any occasion, makes it a core item to add to your wardrobe. With spring just around the corner, this is a great transitional piece for those cooler days. I have linked similar blazers and blazer dresses in a variety of styles and colours to help you to achieve this look and to prepare for spring. Till next time – happy shopping and stay warm!
